Trump should have had a press conference. "Assad with Putin's support has used chemical weapons that were supposedly destroyed years ago under an agreement with the Obama Administration. The American people elected me for change. I have called for Assad and Putin to verify these weapons are turned over that were stored away after Obama's red line; to the international community or the next time they are reported "found" the US with Congressional approval will immediately destroy all delivery sites anywhere in Syria. These are terrorist weapons, not defense tools of a government to protect its people. We are not the Obama administration. We trust but, verify; not reward failure and deception. Conservatives are not Liberals. We govern and will make America, the Great shining beacon of God on a hill, again. Why Liberal Democrats should be Republicans

I would go simple. kitchen table issues. When you ask ordinary folks/families what are the most important things to them / what impacts their own lives, both sides of aisle usually are in sync - best possible education for children, having a say in how taxes are spent, being able to choose a profession or start a business and succeed/fail on own merits, being free from interference in personal information - and then an examination of the platform of the GOP vs. the platform of the Dem. When held up to the party platform, most folks are more comfortable with GOP platform. Once they realize that, you can enhance the discussion by examining either the current corruption in Columbia or the job-crushing regulations in DC, whichever means more to them. Hopefully, folks will begin to realize that local government is easier to impact and change.
